By David Lindquist david.lindquist@indystar.com September 27, 2004 Rock band Alter Bridge represents a shot at redemption for guitarist Mark Tremonti, drummer Scott Phillips and bass player Brian Marshall. As members of Creed, they helped prove that music can be heavy without being intense and that it can be grandiose without being meaningful. But perhaps those sins should be placed at the feet of that group's vocalist, Scott Stapp. Tremonti, Phillips and Marshall showcased their new project Sunday night at the Murat Egyptian Room, where genuine rocking mostly replaced the artifice of yesterday. An estimated crowd of 700 experienced an adrenaline rush when Alter Bridge vocalist Myles Kennedy jumped from a speaker cabinet during opening number "One Day Remains." Later, he slapped hands with audience members and chatted between songs -- a notable contrast to Stapp's self-important messiah act. "One Day Remains" and another early highlight, "Find the Real," illustrated the value of hard rock as tension release. Kennedy sings in a high register and thin timbre -- making him a natural fit for such rave-ups. Overall, the members of Alter Bridge seem more likely to go for broke than take a contemplative knee. Which isn't to say they've forsaken power ballads and their time-tested commercial appeal. "Broken Wings," for instance, featured a pair of Tremonti trademarks: a warm guitar tone and sufficient openings for a larger-than-life chorus. Years of playing large arenas and amphitheaters haven't sapped Phillips' strength. The drummer's muscular playing was obvious to all in the relatively cozy Egyptian Room. Supporting act Submersed played predictably overwrought rock in the tradition of Creed. |
